Find Your People: The Filmmakers Behind "Beautiful, Pam"

When the filmmakers behind Beautiful, Pam joined FiB Live, the conversation quickly evolved into something deeper than a discussion about a single film.  Filmmaker JR Stokes, actor and executive producer Tom Ciorciari, and actor and executive producer Peter Konsevitch spoke candidly about the realities of making independent films, the importance of finding collaborators who believe in the same story, the creative freedom that comes from trust and rehearsal, and the persistence required to pursue art while balancing everyday responsibilities.

Beautiful, Pam follows a Queer sex-worker, named Pam, in the midst of a mid-life crisis during the week of their son’s 18th birthday. While living out of a motel and turning tricks, Pam attempts to balance fatherhood and addiction.

At the center of Beautiful, Pam is the brillant filmmaker JR Stokes, who wrote, directed, and edited the feature with a clear sense of artistic purpose and emotional precision. Stokes spoke about the responsibility of storytelling and the importance of building a creative circle that shares the same vision. While he carried many roles on the film, he was quick to emphasize that independent filmmaking is never the work of one person alone. As he explained, “You have to find the people around you that wanna tell the same story as you… you’re never gonna be able to do it by yourself.” His approach reflects a filmmaker deeply invested not only in craft, but in the collaborative spirit that makes independent cinema possible.

My biggest piece of advice to people would be: FIND YOUR PEOPLE… FIND YOUR FAMILY. That’s what it’s all about.” - JR Stokes

Actor and executive producer Tom Ciorciari, who delivers the film’s central performance as Pam, spoke passionately about the responsibility actors carry when bringing complex characters to life. During the conversation, Ciorciari reflected on the collaborative nature of the filmmaking process, noting that JR Stokes created an environment where actors were encouraged to contribute creatively to the development of each scene.

For Ciorciari, that level of trust and collaboration was essential to the film’s emotional depth, proving that even with limited resources and no budget, a strong creative partnership can elevate a story far beyond its budget.

“JR gave us the room to help shape the scenes and bring our own thoughts and ideas for how the scenes could be best accomplished.” - Tom Ciorciari

Actor and executive producer Peter Konsevitch brought a deeply reflective perspective to the conversation, speaking openly about the discipline required to pursue art while navigating the realities of everyday life. Like many independent artists, Konsevitch balances his creative ambitions with long work hours, yet his outlook remained grounded in perseverance and belief. Rather than viewing those challenges as obstacles, he framed them as part of the journey of becoming an artist.

For Konsevitch, the key is endurance and perspective, continuing to create while trusting that the work will eventually lead somewhere meaningful. His reflections offered a quiet reminder that many independent filmmakers are building it step by step, often after long days of work, sustained by passion and resilience.

“Every day I tell myself this: you go to work and you make that money because you have to… but one day it’s not going to be this job anymore. It’s going to be ART.”  Peter Konsevitch
